Join us!

TRY IT OUT: If you think you'd like to sing with us but you're not sure, come along to rehearsals between 7.15pm and 9.30pm on WEDNESDAYS during school term time, at CARNARVON PRIMARY SCHOOL. Sing with us for a couple of weeks then make up your mind whether you want to join.

The Choral Society is always happy to welcome new members. We don't hold auditions - if you can read music it will make it easier for you, but we welcome anyone who is keen to sing! The annual subscription is currently set at £80 (although this is subject to change). We are particularly keen to encourage younger members to join, so there is a special subscription rate of only £1 for those in full time education.

In addition to our musical activities, we enjoy a range of social activities which help us to raise funds to continue enjoying a high standard of soloists and orchestral support.

Rehearsals at Toot Hill

Why singing?

Notes from a talk on R3 Choral Singing 5.03.04 8.10pm

  • Exhilarating, energising - it is a constant thrill to sing in a choir.
  • John Rutter - a choir just singing a C major chord, perfectly in tune - just like seeing a rainbow.
  • People walk in at the beginning of a rehearsal looking tired and grey and are so stimulated during it that they go out reinvigorated
  • It's an escape - a catharsis - relaxation and inspiration - lifting the spirit to new heights

A lovely tongue in cheek generalisation on the different characters of the voices -

  • 2nd Basses - mellow, kind, supportive, reliable
  • 1st Basses - heroes, ready to conquer Everest
  • Tenors - the lovers, ought to be driving Mercedes
  • Altos - the intellectuals, sometimes more matronly
  • Sopranos - light-weight, ready to flirt with the conductor
