solo organ recital

15′ August Gottfried Ritter (1811-1885) Sonata 1 in D minor

14′ Léon Boëllmann (1862-1897) Organ Mass (compiled from HeuresMystiques)

2′ Entrée in A (Messe 7)

1′ Verset in D (Messe 10)

4′ Offertoire in E flat (Messe 10)

2′ Élévation in G (Messe 2)

2′ Communion in A (Messe 4)

3′ Sortie in F minor (Messe 6)

4′ J. S. Bach Goldberg Variation 25

In this, the longest of the 30 variations, the treble melody expresses anguish through chromaticism, appoggiaturae and yearning dissonances. This expressive freedom is held in tension with the rhythmic strucure of the accompaniment.

13′ César Franck (1822-90) Choral 1

Franck‘s reputation rested on his formidable abilities as an improviser. He travelled widely in France to demonstrate new instruments built by Cavaillé-Coll, and spent most of his life as Organist of the Church of St Clotilde in Paris. His organ music is great because, like that of J.S. Bach, it deeply satisfies the two hemispheres of the brain, intellect and emotion. His three Chorals are effectively a single cyclic work; they date from the last year of his life 1890. Choral 1 is in variation form, includes a searching middle section in the tonic minor, and concludes in a triumphant tutti.
